Ask Ayurveda: How can I wake up each morning with energy?

sleepyDear Ask Ayurveda:

“I am writing today to ask for advice on an issue that seems to be getting worse and worse by the week.  I have never been a morning person, but for the last 2 months or so I feel like I can hardly get out of bed each morning.  No matter how long I sleep for, I have to lay in bed for at least 30 minutes before I can even think about getting up to get ready for work.  After I slowly make my way out of bed, I then drag on for the next 3-4 hours before my mind finally gets a little more clear and my energy becomes “normal”.  Even my morning coffee doesn’t seem to make much of a difference anymore.  When my energy gets better by mid-day or so, I never really feel quite as energized as I had before this shift happened 2 months ago.  Being in the Pacific Northwest, this is usually the best time of year for my energy levels since the sun is out more and it is a bit warmer.  Unfortunately, this is not the case this year.        Continue reading »

Ask Ayurveda: Addressing Sugar Addiction with Ayurveda

sugarDear Ask Ayurveda:

“I am a 41 year old female from the Midwest, happily married but without children.  I work about 50 hours a week at an IT position that is fairly high paced and stressful.  I have a couple minor health issues such as bouts of eczema, reoccurring sinus infections and a seemingly slow metabolism; but my main concern I am hoping to talk about today involves my addiction to sugar.  I know many people have a sweet tooth, but my sweet habits seem to go way beyond this.  I try my best to keep junk food out of the house, but when cravings are high I will even go out of my way at night to make an ice cream, cake or cookie run.  And once I eat one bite, the binge is usually not over until the entire container is gone.  I am usually pretty good on eating a decent breakfast and lunch, but once mid-afternoon rolls around, my energy drops and I suddenly get an intense, uncontrollable need for sugar.  All of my colleagues at work tend to bring in pastries, soda and candy on a daily basis and it seems almost impossible to avoid them.  My husband doesn’t help much either and he often needs a rich dessert after our dinner at night, which is another time my sweet cravings and binging seem to increase.     Continue reading »

Ask Ayurveda: How can I reduce inflammation in my body?

inflammationDear Ask Ayurveda:

“I am 36 years old, although lately I have been feeling like my age is accelerating at an intense rate.  I am the mother of 2 beautiful boys (ages 4 and 6) and work about 30-35 hours a week as a nurse.  I have had issues with inflammation in my body since I gave birth to my oldest, 6 years ago.  Since then I have had on and off inflammation in all different areas of my body, but the main areas that seem affected have been my knees, my wrists and my stomach.  I often feel a sourness in my gut and experience heartburn at least 2 days each week, if not more.  I will even get red dots and rashes on my stomach and chest at least once or twice a month.  All of these symptoms are at their worst at night, and even more so during menstruation.  This pain and inflammation often leaves me fatigued and drained, especially during flare-ups. Ask Ayurveda: What are some healthy snack options for Kapha body-types?

kape chips for kaphaDear Ask Ayurveda:

“I am a Kapha body-type and find myself frustrated once in a while at all of the food restrictions that we have to endure.  I am not currently overweight, but I definitely gain weight extremely easily if I am not careful.  I often read that Kapha types should not eat snacks between meals, and I was curious as to how strict I should be about this.  I am not trying to lose weight anymore, but I also do not want to gain weight.  I am often worried that if I do the wrong things I will be back where I was before (I have lost 30 lbs in the last 2 years).  I typically can make it through a day without snacking, but once in a while it would be nice to have some healthy options in case I want to “cheat” a little.  Do you have any suggestions on some healthy snacks that will not increase my Kapha or cause me to gain weight?” Happy Kapha from California Continue reading »

Ask Ayurveda: How can I avoid feeling overwhelmed in my Ayurvedic routine?

breatheDear Ask Ayurveda:

“I am an avid follower of Ayurveda for over 3 years now.  I have been trying my best to incorporate the routine and practices that will balance my Kapha (my main dosha).  I have noticed so many great changes in my health so far, including losing 10 pounds without even dieting.  I typically am pretty good at keeping to my Ayurvedic routine, however, I can sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed trying to follow so many rules at once.  I usually do a really good job for a couple weeks, but soon I begin to feel overwhelmed and anxious which then leads me to want to give up on everything.  How can I be strict about following a routine in a more balanced way?  My perfectionist nature wants me to do everything 100%, but sometimes I feel more stressed out by this than anything.  Do you have any tips on how I can make these positive changes in my life without this feeling of “all or nothing”?  Thanks for your time and all of your insightful articles (I am a regular reader of yours)!”  Overwhelmed in Ayurveda Continue reading »

Ask Ayurveda: Tongue Scraping VS Tongue Brushing: Is there a difference?

tongues

Dear Ask Ayurveda:

“A friend of mine recently told me about the benefits of tongue scraping for oral health and even the health of the body.  I have not used an official tongue scraper before, but I have been brushing my tongue with my toothbrush for years.  I am just curious if there is a difference and if one is more powerful than the other.  I do have a slight coating on the back of my tongue and often have bad breath in the morning.  Do you think a tongue scraper would be better for these issues than simply brushing the tongue?  I would be happy to switch if it would be beneficial.”  Tongue Brusher in Texas Continue reading »

Ask Ayurveda: How do you Treat Vata and Pitta at the Same Time?

internal-and-externalDear Ask Ayurveda:

I was hoping you could talk to us a little about how to balance BOTH Vata and Pitta at the same time.  This is particularly tricky for me as my constitution is almost 50/50. If I am feeling Pitta aggravated and I follow the traditional cooling food/lifestyle recommended for Pitta, sometimes it will go too far and I will then become Vata aggravated. My Pitta friends tell me they struggle with this as well. Western culture can be so Vata aggravating with too much computer, video, travel… They are often dealing with Vata aggravation, even though their constitution is quite Pitta.  I’m sure there are few Vata folks out there too who sometimes have trouble staying balanced in the summer, as typical Pitta reducing advice can be too cooling for them.  How do we balance the two?  Running Hot and Cold,  BC  Canada Continue reading »
