As I come upon my son’s third birthday, I promised him I would write this article in honor of him and in honor of all of the woman in the world who have lost their unborn baby. It is a story that never gets easier, and it is a story that will never have a happy ending. All I hope to do is to acknowledge my son, acknowledge my story, and acknowledge the fact that miscarriages and stillbirths are still very real for many woman today. When I became pregnant with my first child, I was through the roof. I...

Dear Ask Ayurveda, I live in the Pacific Northwest of North America. It rains A LOT in fall. Although I am beginning to crave warmer fall foods, I find some can be quite dampening (for example, winter squash, dairy. . .). Some days I feel so water-logged I want to binge on popcorn, yet I know you are supposed to avoid Vata-aggravating foods during the fall season. This has got me thinking about other folks whose seasons are more atypical — like in Arizona where it’s mostly dry or Greenland where it’s mostly snowy. So how do we adjust the...

It is clearly stated in Ayurveda that there is a powerful mind, body, and spirit connection. In order to establish health in any of these areas, we must obtain health in all three. Our emotions have a direct effect on our physical body (and vice versa) and if we have deep-seated, unresolved emotions, our physical health will never be at its best. Although our emotions may have numerous negative effects on our body, each emotion has an affinity with a specific organ. Any long-term, deep-seated emotional imbalance will begin to weaken the affected area, and over time can cause...

As I made my way back into the world of seasonal cleansing this fall, I thought it would be nice to share this experience that I have gone through. After 2 consecutive pregnancies and 13 months of breastfeeding straight after, I simply have not had the ability to perform any type of detoxification program for three years now, which for an Ayurvedic practitioner can be a long, long time. So as the fall settled in and I realized that I FINALLY have no healthcare constrictions at this moment, I was very eager and excited to jump back in! Why do...

There is nothing better than a nice warm, soothing breakfast on a cool fall or winter morning! Oatmeal can be a great option, however, it is a bit heavy for some individuals and if you are used to eating oats day in and day out, it can become rather bland and boring. This sweet potato porridge is a delicious alternative, being a nice balance of light (from the millet), grounding (from the sweet potato), easy to digest, and exceptionally nutrient-rich. Millet is considered one of the “ancient grains”, although, in reality, it is a seed. It is rich in protein,...

In Ayurveda, fresh homemade yogurt is said to possess immensely different qualities than its store bought counterpart; the homemade version being healthy, medicinal, cooling, and sweet while the store bought is considered heavy, viscous, stale, heating, and sour. When homemade, kefir shares these same life-promoting properties and is considered even healthier overall due to the vast number of probiotic strains that inhabit one culture (10 to 20+ on average!). Yogurt on the other hand often only contains 1 to 2 strains. If this isn’t enough to get you on board, making homemade kefir is much more simple and fool-proof and...

With the cold winter evenings upon us, I have been thoroughly enjoying my golden milk before bed each night. Although it is traditionally made using dairy milk, it can be equally as nourishing using a healthy nut milk alternative such as homemade almond milk. Since I am drinking the golden milk on a nightly basis, I often prefer this recipe over the dairy version which can be a bit too heavy for me before bed and leave me with a coated tongue and congestion in the morning. Almond milk (specifically homemade) is much lighter by nature and easier for many...

Castor oil is an age-old Ayurvedic remedy with quite a number of beneficial uses. Although it can seem too good to be true, this thick, sticky oil is not only affordable and easy to obtain, but it is indeed extremely effective as well. Whether you are suffering from itchy, allergy eyes or something deeper such as an unwanted fibroid or cyst, this versatile oil can come to the rescue, making it an Ayurvedic self-care essential According to Ayurveda, castor oil is heating when taken internally, but cooling when applied externally. Because of this, it is considered beneficial for many Pitta...

Dear Ask Ayurveda: “I am writing today to ask for advice on an issue that seems to be getting worse and worse by the week. I have never been a morning person, but for the last 2 months or so I feel like I can hardly get out of bed each morning. No matter how long I sleep for, I have to lay in bed for at least 30 minutes before I can even think about getting up to get ready for work. After I slowly make my way out of bed, I then drag on for the next 3-4...
