Vidari Kanda is one of the essential life-promoting, rejuvenative herbs of Ayurveda and is well known for its sweet taste and energizing effect. Being a starchy root, it is similar to ashwagandha and shatavari, and like many rasayana (aka rejuvenative) herbs, it has a special affinity for boosting the libido, enhancing fertility, strengthening the muscles, and reducing signs of aging.
Vidari is a great herb option for both Vata and Pitta types during times of depletion, fatigue, nervous system distress, and reproductive issues. It is great for men that are in need of increasing muscle mass, or are dealing with impotence, low sperm count, premature ejaculation, or an enlarged prostate. It is great for woman that are experiencing low progesterone levels (its a natural progesterone precursor), low fertility, endometriosis, inflammation in the uterus, or ovarian cysts. Vidari has been traditionally taken during pregnancy* to strengthen the placenta and nourish the fetus, and is routinely prescribed during the postpartum period to nourish the mama and boost lactation levels.
*Always check with your doctor before taking any herbs during pregnancy.
Vidari can be taken as a daily tonic for supporting healthy aging, maintaining optimal energy and strength, and promoting a healthy, youthful complexion. It is a natural source of zinc, calcium, and magnesium, making it a great tonic for supporting bone health. Due to its demulcent nature, Vidari is beneficial during many digestive complaints including constipation, hyperacidity, peptic ulcer, ulcerative colitis, leaky gut, and general inflammation in the GI tract. Vidari is a very versatile herb that nourishes all seven vital tissues of the body and can be used to treat many disorders and maintain a healthy system.
Although Vidari is a great herbal option for many individuals, it is not always the best choice for every-body. When taken in excess, Vidari can increase Kapha and create toxins. Therefore if you are experiencing high Kapha or currently have excessive toxins in the system, it is recommended to avoid Vidari until the Kapha has been balanced and the system has been cleansed.
