Pippali is a very diverse essential in the world of Ayurvedic medicine. The name itself means “to drink and digest,” revealing one of its main benefits: Increasing the digestion and burning toxins. As an herb or a culinary spice, Pippali is commonly used to treat a wide range of disorders from coughs, colds, and congestion to digestive issues, reproductive issues, and even mental imbalances.
Pippali can be a great herbal option any time of year. However, due to its powerful lung rejuvenation properties, it is an exceptionally amazing herb to take during the spring season. Although springtime possesses many beautiful aspects, this season is also well known for irritating allergies, congestion, colds, and cough. Ayurveda states that the spring season is the main time of year for Kapha dosha and, therefore, Kapha imbalances such as the ones just mentioned will flourish. Adding Pippali to your springtime seasonal routine will be a great addition to ward away the common issues that this season brings.
Pippali is known as a “tridoshic” herb, as it is suitable for all body-types. Unlike its close relative, black pepper (maricha), Pippali can even be used in moderation for Pitta types due to its cooling, post-digestive effect (vipak). Therefore, Pippali can be a safe and effective option for most digestive disorders, even when Pitta (fire/heat) is increased in the body. Please note that this is a very potent herb and should only be used in small dosages, although Kapha types can typically get away with taking a bit more.

We just purchased Pippali and I see above where you mention Anxiety. I do not see a tonic mixture for this? Above you list 7 home remedies but nothing about Anxiety. Can you tell me what other ingredients i need to help w. this? Or do I just take Pippali w/ water alone? Thanks
Hi Kelly,
Thank you for your question! Pippali is beneficial for the mind, and therefore anxiety. In order to make it more potent however, you can mix it with some Ashwagandha powder and ghee. I would take 1/2 tsp Ashwagandha, 1/2 tsp ghee and 1/8-1/4 tsp Pippali. Mix these together and take twice daily, once in the morning on an empty stomach and again around 2-3pm (Vata time). Feel free to mix this blend in warm water or rinse it down with warm water after taking. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further questions!

Thanks for the nice information in the article. I want to ask that I m using long pepper as spice instead of black pepper in cooking our meals since last two years and we don’t have any obvious problem, is it ok or not
Thanks
Thanks Danielle will do.. I have been taking 1/8 tsp of pippali w/ one gel tab of Ashwagandha mixed into warm water in the morning but after I eat. Only once a day. I can say for the 1 week I have been doing just that I do feel already a huge difference. Regarding adding the Ghee do I melt it?
Thanks
Kelly
Ideally yes, you can either melt the ghee in a small amount of hot water, or use a small pan to melt. If it is easier to take in solid form, just make sure to rinse the mixture down with mildly hot water.

Indian Long Pepper and its Powerful Health Benefits
– Svastha Ayurveda <Loved it!
I am suffering from sinus n brochits n asthmatic so i have been advised to take 3 long peeper in one cup water n one cup milk to boil n remain one cup n take it twice a day n i like sipping. For how many days it should be taken to givr gap
Hi Surinder,
Thank you for your question. The Pippali steeped in warm milk is indeed a great remedy for respiratory disorders such as bronchitis and asthma. If you are only using 3 Pippali fruits daily, this is a very mild dosage and you can take this as long as needed.
Dr Lad has taught me another method for taking this remedy. This includes steeping one Pippali fruit in the milk on the first day of treatment and increasing with one Pippali fruit per day until you have reached 16 fruits on day 16. From here, you will then decrease the Pippali by one each day until the dosage has returned to one and the discontinue at this point. To steep, you can heat one cup of milk mixed with one cup of water with the desired amount of Pippali fruits. Steep on a low heat with the lid slightly ajar until only one cup of liquid remains. Strain and enjoy! I hope this helps:)

Hi Danielle, can u pls suggest how to use long pepper for high blood pressure for my hubby aged 42
Hi Swayam,
I apologize on the delayed response. For high blood pressure Pippali can be taken with the herb Arjuna. For this, your husband should take 1/2 teaspoon of Arjuna with 1/8 teaspoon of freshly ground Pippali in 1/2 cup of water, three times daily, before meals. He should be very consistent for best results. Many blessings to you and your hubby:)

How does one use this for weight management?
Hi there,
Pippali is generally taken for weight management along with the herbs ginger and black pepper to make the formula known as Trikatu. You can blend these there spices in equal parts and take 1/2 teaspoon of this formula in 1 teaspoon of honey before each meal. Follow each dosage with a few sips of warm water.
Please let me know if you have any further questions! Be well:)

Danielle
Greetings Danielle,
I’ve found this site to be most informative. I was wondering if Pippali can be used as a replacement for black pepper to obtain the highest medicinal benefits when combined with turmeric. Specifically, I’m making a golden milk recipe and though this would be a good substitute.
Many thanks,
Steve
Hi Steven,
Thank you for your question! Yes, Pippali can be a great replacement for black pepper if you are experiencing too much heat or Pitta dosha. It will help you to absorb the turmeric better and will increase turmeric’s overall potency when they are taken together. Pippali is known as a Yoga Vahi and is a great addition to many formulas because of these special actions that it possesses.
Thank you so much for writing in! Let me know if you have any further questions.
Namaste,
Danielle
